Port of Piraeus, discussing what to do next, 13.03.2016.
The most difficult for me is to raise the camera and take a picture,
capture the moment. These are moments everyone wants to let go of, cease to
recall in the near future. And there is nothing to say, on top. Broken words
come and go in your mind, meaningless ideas. The only thought persistent is
what to do, the one thing after the other, hopefully to shrink the chaos.

Manage the donations then; load and unload clothes, shoes, bottles of
water, milk and juice, plastic cups, spoons, forks and knives, fruits and
vegetables, snacks, cans, sanitary care products, toys for the kids.
Cook and serve; make sure everyone has taken one portion and if possible
give out more.
Make a list of what each one is missing and find what they need afterwards
amongst the donations; otherwise bring what you have at home.
Explain that the borders are closed; again and again and again, yet
without being able to justify it.
Make the children smile, play, dance, draw, sing; transfer their imagination
elsewhere and catch yourself smiling unconsciously while taking a picture.
Face the weather; and wish you were God at that moment.
Make a plan for the next day; who is arriving, who wants to depart or
even to come back*, whose shift is where, how much more space you (don't) have,
how to deal with the authorities, the media, the smugglers.
Return home - sometime - realising for most of the things you did you
needn't speak the same language to communicate; except for the little girl pointing
hesitantly at the port guards exclaiming "Police!"...
Have a shower and drop exhausted on the bed; remember that most of these
people can't shower and have no bed.
Close your eyes and sleep.
Tomorrow is another same day. **

* Disappointed with the accommodation camps they are moved to, lately many refugees return to the Port and resettle there.
